Booking a Visit
We run this job out of Savannah, about 13 miles from Wilmington Island, so a visit here gets scheduled as a trip rather than a drop-in. That's worth knowing before you call: we're not based on the island, and we don't carry a separate crew or truck stationed out here. What we do carry is the roller stock and track hardware sized for the doors common to this area's housing stock, so once we're on site the repair itself doesn't take longer than it would anywhere else in the service area. If you've got a double door with one bad roller and three more about to go, say so when you call - it changes whether we bring a full roller set or just a few.
What Can Go Wrong
Steel rollers on steel track, the setup you'll find on most original doors here, fail two ways. The roller bearing dries out and seizes, which makes the door scrape and bind as it travels. Or the roller wheel itself flat-spots from age, which you'll hear as a rhythmic thump every time it makes a full rotation. Savannah's climate band is mild with occasional freeze, so you're not dealing with the deep-freeze cracking that splits plastic rollers up north, but the humidity here does its own damage - it works into an unsealed bearing faster than dry air would, which shortens the life of steel rollers that were never sealed in the first place. A bent track from a roller that's already jumped the rail is a different repair than a worn roller, and it's one we check for before quoting a roller-only fix.
What Is on the Truck
For doors from this housing stock we carry both steel and nylon replacement rollers, since some owners on the island have already upgraded partway and want to finish the swap rather than go back to steel. We also carry galvanized track sections, because a worn track groove sometimes needs more than a fresh roller to run quiet again. What we don't stock on the truck is custom-length track for anything outside standard residential door heights - that's a special order, and if a door here needs it, we'll tell you the lead time up front rather than guess.
Why This Fails Locally
With a median income of $92,578 and 6,018 households on the island, a fair number of these doors are original to homes built when steel rollers were simply what every door came with - nobody chose them over nylon, they were the only option. That's different from newer construction elsewhere in the service area, where doors from the 1990s and 2000s often already run nylon rollers from the factory. A roller fix here is as much about matching 40-year-old hardware tolerances as it is about the roller itself, which is why we inspect the track and bracket before quoting the job rather than pricing a roller swap sight unseen.
